Ryan and Sarah Engagement

It's not often that I get the opportunity to travel very far outside of Richmond for something like an engagement shoot, mostly because my couples are from here and they love the city.  Ryan and Sarah live in the NOVA are and wanted to do something different and I was totally on board.  We decided to shoot in Great Falls National Park and it was beautiful.  I honestly want to do so many more shoots in environments like this. Below are a handfull of images from their afternoon shoot.

I really enjoyed getting to know them though this shoot and they were both up for the adventure.

I am always looking for ways to help create genuine moments of intimacy, and for these two it wasn't very hard.  Here I just had Sarah tell Ryan how much he meant to her, it was a pretty sweet moment to capture.  I was out of ear shot but I can only imagine it was something personal and touching.  Along with the beautiful intimacy I we also had a lot of fun, there was plenty of laughter and joy to go around.

For My photo friends, all images were shot with an 85 1.2 and a canon 5d IV and edited with DVLOP Presets

This shoot was under the umbrella of 88Lovestories

Sangie + Jay

Sangie and Jay were married 9 years ago, but didn't have the money for a big wedding or a professional photographer at the time.  When Sangie reached out to me, they had just found out that they were expecting their first baby.  They really wanted to show their kids and future grandkids what their wedding day would have looked like.   I loved the idea and knew how meaningful it would be to share these images with their growing famly .  We decided to shoot at  Maymont Park in Richmond, Virginia  and had a blast.  Even though the day was super-cold,  it was no match for the romance between these two.

As soon as she got out of the car and I saw how pretty she looked I had her stand in this little patch of trees for a quick portrait.

All smilles, all day.

All smilles, all day.

Here, she said: "Jay, pick me up and spin me around like they do in the movies."

I love the sweet intimate moments that happen during shoots like these.

I could have spent an entire day with these two- they were both so enjoyable to be around and the love and happiness was contagious. As soon as I got home from the shoot, I told Lindsey all about it. I hope I get to tell many more love stories like this one this year.

For my photographer friends, this was my first shoot with my Leica M10 and I used the Sam Hurd Dvlop presets on these images.

Andrew+Kaitlyn Martin

Here is one from the archives, I had the incredible honor of photographing these two.  Never have I met a couple that were so genuine in every aspect that I have seen them in, it's been over a year since their wedding and we have stayed in touch via various forms of social media. I truly wish they lived closer because they are just that special, they're people that I'd want to share life with. There has been more than one time that either a simple phone call or Facebook post has really encouraged me and helped me keep perusing this dream.  I have met several couples that I feel this way about but Andrew and Kaitlyn have a special place in my heart. Below are photos from their perfect wedding day at Stover Hall

Steven + Heathers Wedding

I enjoyed becoming friends with Steven and Heather over the last year, and having the opportunity to shoot their wedding was an honor.  From our first meeting to talk about what they were looking for from a photographer I knew we were a good fit.  And throughout the process I got the chance to get coffee and dinner with them and my wife a few times resulting in a friendship that I hope continues to grow.  The day was super special, some of my favorite moments were the first look with Heather and her father, the fact that as soon as the ceremony started they never quit holding each other hands, to the small moments of joy laughter and tears.  Definitely one of the more special weddings of the year.

Below are some of my favorite images from their wedding.

Katie and Jeremy's Wedding

Katie is a good friend of my wife, Lindsey, so I was excited to get the opportunity to shoot and celebrate her wedding. Getting to know Katie and Jeremy, they both are laid back and wanted to enjoy their wedding day, rather than have every moment planned out exactly. Watching their family and friends join with them in their celebration at the Hanover Tavern showed how much love and joy people have for this fun couple!

Katie and Jeremy decided to do a first look which allowed me to capture these sweet moments.

I also brought along the Mamiya RZ67 with me. Take a look at this cool shot!

Then we had some fun with the bridal party.

During the ceremony, Katie and Jeremy incorporated their own unique styles and even played guitar together.

Guests had a great time at the reception, complete with corn hole, giant jenga, and dancing.

Thank you so much for letting me join in on your special day, Katie and Jeremy!

Sawyer's National Park Themed Nursery

A lot of changes have happened in our family. We recently welcomed our little daughter, Sawyer, into the world July 7. We waited the entire pregnancy to see what we were having, so in preparing for the nursery we knew we needed to make it as gender neutral as possible. Lindsey also wanted to make sure that the room would transform as our baby got older. Each year for our anniversary, Lindsey and I travel to a different National or State Park. We have a map of the Appalachian Trail hanging in our house and with the National Park Service having its Centennial celebration this year, we decided to make our nursery have a National Park/outdoor theme. Enjoy these photos of our adventure nursery!

The Anderson Design Group has these great vintage posters of each National Park that we had printed. The Buffalo quilt and Aztec sun pillowcases were gifts from Lindsey's godmother who used to work on an Indian reservation.

As part of a gift for our baby shower, friends and family gave us a book so we could stock up for our baby library. The pinecones came from California when Lindsey and her family traveled there growing up. They make great additions as bookends.

How about the bear rug!

We have some pretty talented friends too. Our friend Natalie created the woodland creatures above the doors and the arrow that says "Be strong and courageous". Our friend Rachel created the needlework with the woodland creature in between the doors. The dream catcher was a gift from our friend Mallory which completes the room as a mobile. She designed and created it! It pays to have creative friends.
